This is an authentic Charleston SC Slave Hire Badge or referred to as a Slave Tag. It is solid with no holes and no repairs. The only thing that I have done is clean it up a bit. It is a Charleston, occupation “Servant”, year made “1818” and the number issued to the tag is “226”. On the back is stamped with the makers name, “Lafar”. During the even number years, the tags were square. During the odd number of years they were square and diamond shaped. This tag is square measuring 2 1/8 x 2 1/4 inches. Tags during the 1840’s, 50’s and 60’s were made smaller. The earlier tags are the most desirable. With this tag comes a letter of authenticity. The item “Charleston SC Slave Tag, 1818, Lafar Stamped, Not a Reproduction” is in sale since Monday, August 29, 2016.
