Old Custom Handmade Bowie Fighting Knife Stamped Standard Saw Works Oakland CA… Measures approx 15 OAL. The wicked looking, clip point blade is about 9.75″, with a cutting edge of 9″. The spine is a full 5/16. Note that the ricasso has some “puddling”, surface indentations on both sides. I suppose that could be from a weld/repair, or another part of the making of this big blade. I do not see any cracks in the steel. Everything looks very sturdy, nothing is loose. The knife weighs in at over 1 lb, 5 ozs, and has nice balance in my hand. Note the impressive full guard and steel pommel cap, where the tang was peened over and there are another two pins holding that cap in place. The wooden handle is tapered toward the guard, it has a generous grip, and is very handsome in coloration and grain. Note a couple of tight hairlines, and some areas of abrasions and scars, scratches. My thoughts about the stamping: The Standard Saw Works has been in Oakland, CA since 1960. They seem to specialize in the sharpening and reconditioning of saws, knives. I do not know if anybody there ever actually made knives. If the steel is from a saw blade, it would have been a seriously heavy saw, such as the 2-man brutes used to fell redwood trees. Alternatively some talented knife maker got ahold of the already stamped steel, which served as the “raw material” for what was turned into a wonderful knife. Note that the “Oa” of what is Oakland, is worn away. The knife looks used to me. It has grind marks, some tiny nicks on the edge (which is sharp), tarnish and pitting.
