Nice collectible spade bit maker stamped with ” Star Steel Silver ” from August Buermann – It’s very old and has signs of age and use. I have provided a few zoom pics of an exterior crack on mountside by mouth and it does not appear to go all the way through. I have several more bits and collectible items that will be posted over the next several days – so thanks for stopping by – and please check out my other offerings. From a little research – This bit made sometime between 1866 and 1926 – – before Buermann was bought out by North & Judd in 1926, based on the “Star Steel Silver” stamping. August Buermann immigrated to the US from Germa. Ny in 1864 and enlisted with the US Army. Buermann was a great businessman and bought out Barclay and renamed the company Buermann Manufacturing Co in 1866. Over the next 60 years Buermanns company produced the most complete catalog of bits and spurs of any company in the US, producing as many as 441 spur styles and 496 bit patterns. Many of these styles were original designs which were patented, as well as many other popular designs that were copied from other makers. Buermann also patented a metal alloy he called Hercules Bronze, which was a nonrusting alloy that had a nice bronze appearance (though it is not bronze). In 1926, North and Judd bought the Buermann company, its catalog, factory, and logos. North and Judd continued to produce many popular Buermann patterns, especially in Hercules Bronze with the Anchor logo after 1926…. Additional photos also available if you need to see a particular angle or measurement. Thanks for looking & Happy Trails!
