An original Civil War letter including the envelope dated April 30th 1865. The envelope has the send to address of Sergt. Some of the writing is a little hard to read, I translated the best I could. Ever Dear Soldier Son! We heard by Charlie Cook, of your accident a week ago tomorrow and were very thankful that you escaped with so small an injury when the chances of being killed instantly or being horribly mangled were so great…………. On the subject of the late victories and the prospects of returning peace as also in relation to the saddening cloud that so soon over spread the nation we of the North feel in degsu much as you express the joy & sadness of the soldiers Never did I see the people generally so overwhelmed with sorrow as by the death of our almost adored President. And it is so hard to for reconciled to his death in the manner it came and while I do not believe it was Providence of god any farther than that he did not exert Allmighty power to prevent it, but that it was the legitimate puit of the rebelllion & that the cruelties of slavery had qualified its leaders and other sympathizing Demons to carry out so Diabolical a scheme………. President Lincoln had reached the zenith of his glory had the deed been done any sooner it would have been far otherwise and we can see no possible way or any other man who could have conducted the affairs of the nation in its terrible crisis so near a glorious terminus. But it may be that he was too good and too Christian a man to deal with leading rebels according………. The letter has wear, there is a piece missing and mount like marks in one area that cuts out some words, there are remnants of stamps that were stuck and removed, the envelope has some wear.
