Up for consideration is a nice old civil war saber / bayonet. It is a steel blade with a brass handle 26.5 inches long. It is believed to be a M1855 model. The bayonet fullers are rounded. The all brass cast hilt is secured by a steel pin through the guard. It has a spring loaded mechanism that secures the bayonet to the rifle lug. It has a ribbed grip. It is thought to be a Harper’s Ferry made bayonet. Harper’s ferry arsenal was burned by the confederates in 1861. The machines and parts were then taken to The Confederate armory in Fayetteville, N. So it appears that these bayonets were made for the South as well as the North. This was a universal bayonet used by both sides during the civil war, Plus the fact soldiers picked up supplies on the battlefield and again were used by both sides. For condition , please look at the photos. This is a used sabre / bayonet. The spring action works, there is pitting towards the tip of the blade. This bayonet / sabre is only for the United States.
