Extraordinary ZUNI NAVAJO KNIFE WING GOD SILVER, STONE & SHELL RAISED-STAMPED BOX. Especially pleasing is the salmon colored clamshell used and the accompanying carving of this beautiful shell forming the wings (and separately the jet tail). In terms of quality of artistry, I think this box is in the upper 10% of all similar ZUNI/NAVAJO silver boxes made and you would be hard pressed to find a better example in the market today. The proportions of the Zuni inlaid work on the Navajo box seems just perfect. The last pic details an article on the C. WALLACE INDIAN TRADER Trading Post that this box may have originated from. This was across from the EL NAVAJO HARVEY HOUSE in Gallup, NM. I received a note from a collector who said that this may be the fine work of Austin Wilson. Austin Wilson worked during the 1940’s until his death as an excellent silversmith and jewelry artist. He used high quality turquoise to complement his silver work.
