Civil War militia buckle, very rare sheet pewter stamped buckle. This is a very rare Rectangular tinned sheet-irion buckle, circa 1840’s through 1850’s, and no doubt through the Civil War. These stamped sheet-metals buckles were most frequently used in militia units (which comprised 100% of the Confederate Army, as the Confederates had no “regular” army; it was all militias and volunteers). Northern militias when using these stamped sheet-metal buckles are most exampled to have used stamped sheet brass. Stamped sheet tin and sheet pewter are most frequently encountered from Southern units. Halsey (this is just informational; the price is the standard price for an investment grade buckle of this construction, with no premium added as their is no definitive proof beyond speculation that it belonged to a Southern militia officer). Condition is good, with turned corners (this was commonly done to avoid snags and cuts on the sharp corners of the buckle). No rust or pitting, uniform oxidation has yielded a uniform aged patina; display and investment quality.
