This is an early Winchester M1 Carbine stock, oval-cut oiler slot, high wood. The wood on the top of the right side of the stock has a thin rail that continues rearward and aligns with the bottom of the handguard. This thin rail of wood was prone to cracking, often snapping right off, and is only present on the first two models of Carbine stock. The third model of Carbine stock was the oval-cut low wood which put the lowering radius on the right side much farther forward, lining up pretty much with the corresponding relief cut in the handguard. This is the configuration most casual Carbine collectors are most familiar with. I-cut high woods were produced in 1942 only, oval-cut high woods were 1943 only and type 3s were 1944 onward. Heres where it starts to get interesting! .. There was a field modification work order (FMWO) stating all previous models were to be cut to low wood configuration. Thus making those low wood I-cut stocks that are seemingly an anomaly. Further down the line during the war, additional controls were developed for the Carbine and some of the wood on the inside and to the left of the stock had to be relieved. They also fattened the bottom up and these stocks are known as potbellys. There are also no less than three additional models of USGI Carbine stock, but they are not germane to this discussion. This stock is of the second model, oval-cut high wood, which did NOT have the high wood lowered but stayed in service through the war, skipped the original mod. And even went through post-war rebuild getting its Rock Island Arsenal / Ernie Broberg rebuild stamp! Without getting the high wood lowered! This stock is historic proof that not all FMWOs were followed, and a very early second type! Stock could stay in-system and skip all the upgrades! Stock is IDd as Winchester by the very clear W stamp in the slingwel as well as the telltale dead flat bottom on the fore-end. The crossed cannon escutcheon is not present on the right side. The thin high wood itself is pretty solid but there is a hairline crack that just started, did not go all the way to the end and make the high wood prone to snapping off. You can still barely make it out, but I always make full disclosure. A skilled wood worker can fix this no problem. Really just a bit of two part clear epoxy run through with dental floss would get it done… This stock is historically significant and worth saving! Pushing on it like a knucklehead and cracking it further will NOT constitute grounds for return!! I CAN NOT even count how many times Ive seen people crack old vintage wood by showing everyone how expert they are by pushing in the right spot to check for a crack, but they are the ones who actually crack it by pushing too darn hard! Which is exceedingly rare that I miss something important in my description. I do my best to describe an item and put great stock in being honest and professional.
